The Research Strategy Team is thrilled to announce the publication of the new Research Milestones 2008 booklet. This annual booklet reports on the distribution of NBCF funds across different research projects and highlights some of the exciting research developments across major areas of breast cancer research.

The 2008 booklet wears the message – “Doing breast cancer research costs a fortune – not doing it costs more”. NBCF cannot provide opportunities for funding Australia’s most talented researchers, nor make real advances in battling breast cancer, without the continued generosity of the Australian public and our corporate supporters. Research takes lots of time and money.

Research Milestones 2008 emphasizes the need for your continued support, as our researchers attack this aggressive disease head-on.

New information service

The NBCF’s Research Strategy Team has launched its free information email service. The intention is to circulate research team driven information to interested supporters e.g. research team media releases, amendments to our grants portfolio, calls for applications, profiles on grants and researchers. Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Scheme (PdCCRS)

The Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Scheme (PdCCRS) is a collaboration of funding
partners aiming to:

• provide a coordinated approach among funding organisations to fund cancer research in priority areas
• foster collaboration between research groups and individuals on a single research project
• lessen duplication and fragmentation of research effort at the national level.

In 2008, Cancer Australia is partnering with:

• beyondblue: the national depression initiative
• The Cancer Council Australia
• Cure Cancer Australia Foundation, and
• National Breast Cancer Foundation

The National Breast Cancer Foundation has honoured UOW’s Professor Don Iverson for his role in establishing a national breast cancer research program.

NSW Governor Professor Marie Bashir presented Professor Iverson with the foundation’s Award for Innovation at the Annual Pink Ribbon Awards at Government House on 18 February.

Professor Iverson, who is Executive Dean of UOW’s Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences, led a review of Australia’s priorities for breast cancer research in 2003, which resulted in the development of a national research plan.

In its citation for the award, the foundation described Professor Iverson as the driving force behind many of the innovations introduced into its research program.

Professor Iverson, who had wide experience in cancer research in Canada and the United States before joining UOW in 2001, made a range of key recommendations for the development of a national research program for breast cancer which have all been successfully adopted.

These included approving large scale research projects over five to 10 years; establishing a fund for special infrastructure such as a national tissue bank that researchers across Australia had access to; funding novel ideas that were possibly high-risk but had the potential to deliver high returns; and changing the research grants process to facilitate innovation.

He also initiated the very successful annual Global Illumination Consular Corps dinners which launch the annual Pink Ribbon campaign.

Professor Iverson continues to serve on the foundation’s committees.

Wollongong people took two of the three awards, with Dr Margaret Gardiner receiving the Community Involvement Award for her titeless fund-raising work in the local community.

My name is Nicole and I work in child care centre. I am 36-years-old, married with two beautiful daughters. I enjoy being with kids and helping them learn the very first things about themselves. Teaching them makes them happy and makes me happy at the same time. I want every kid to feel special and to have everything that will help them to have a happy childhood.

A few years ago I realised that there are a lot of people that feel depressed or have some kind of a problem that I would like to help, so I decided to go and find a way to help them. After doing a lot of research about community organisations, and the ways they help people, I became a volunteer in Salvation Army.

After joining this community organization I feel much relived knowing that everyday of my life I help thousands of people who have problems with abuse, poverty, alcohol or drugs. As a volunteer for the Salvos I knock on doors and ask people to help me help others in need.

There is no better feeling that helping somebody that needs your help.

This poster is such a great illustration of what poverty really is. The one think that really stressed me out is the mother and the child, the look on their face like there is no future like everything that they had is gone and all they have now is just sadness and depression.

This is one of the oldest salvation army posters in UK.

The Salvation Army Disaster Van rolled up to Pineville City Hall recently to supply coffee, juice and donuts to says thanks to some of the same people they work along side of in a time of need. Pineville Mayor Clarence Fields was joined by members of the Pineville Fire Department in presenting a proclamation to Captain Mark Price and members of the Salvation Army. Captain Price was able to report to Mayor Fields that their 2001 Annual Report showed they had served 35,000 meals through their Soup Kitchen; provided clothing and house fire assistance to over 300 families; and Christmas assistance to 1,282 children, 681 families, with 318 food baskets and 8,126 gift packs. The Salvation Army was indeed true to it’s slogan in 2001 … Changing the World – One Life at a Time.
